If you are the victim of an abusive spouse or partner, you need to seek help in protecting yourself and your children with appropriate restraining orders. Although restraining orders are not perfect, such orders give law enforcement authorities the legal basis to intervene immediately. If you cannot afford an attorney there are services available that provide help to victims of abuse at little or no cost. Do not hesitate to use them.

On the other hand, if you have learned that you have difficulty controlling your emotions or your actions towards your spouse or children, seek help without delay. Get counseling, or join a therapy group to learn anger management skills. The sooner you do this, the better your chances are to achieve an improved relationship with your spouse or partner, and your children. Moreover, you may avoid becoming the subject of a restraining order.
